Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Wednesday, May 5 in 2021, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
Cinco de Mayo History Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, a popular misconception. Instead, it commemorates a single battle. In 1861, Benito Juárez—a lawyer and member of the indigenous Zapotec tribe—was elected president of Mexico. At the time, the country was in financial ruin after years of internal strife, and the new president was forced to default on debt payments to European governments. In response, France, Britain and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz, Mexico, demanding repayment. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew their forces. France, however, ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to carve an empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large force of troops and driving President Juárez and his government into retreat. The Battle of Puebla Certain that success would come swiftly, 6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico. From his new headquarters in the north, Juárez rounded up a ragtag force of 2,000 loyal men—many of them either indigenous Mexicans or of mixed ancestry—and sent them to Puebla. The vastly outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans, led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza, fortified the town and prepared for the French assault. On May 5, 1862, Lorencez gathered his army—supported by heavy artillery—before the city of Puebla and led an assault. How Long Did the Battle of Puebla Last? The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers. Fewer than 100 Mexicans had been killed in the clash. Although not a major strategic win in the overall war against the French, Zaragoza’s success at the Battle of Puebla on May 5 represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and bolstered the resistance movement. In 1867—thanks in part to military support and political pressure from the United States, which was finally in a position to aid its besieged neighbor after the end of the Civil War—France finally withdrew. The same year, Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, who had been installed as emperor of Mexico in 1864 by Napoleon, was captured and executed by Juárez’s forces. Puebla de Los Angeles was renamed for General Zaragoza, who died of typhoid fever months after his historic triumph there.
The jewel of the dessert. Be Safe and GOD Speed. LHOWDY
I started doing electrical work bac in 1966. In 1967 I got my journeyman license and in 1969 I got my master license. I started my own company in June of 1969 Macs Electric. By 1974 I was doing so much business it was a miracle from god. I just did not know how to give thanks to the lord. I had three trucks six employees and my wife Barbara took all the messages and collected all the money. I drove a new pickup, Barbara drove a yellow Buick Rivera. During that time, I cosigned a note for all my five brothers and sisters and every one of them left me hanging so to maintain my credit I had to Pay all five of them off so much a month which took a lot of my income. I got a job rewiring a motel that a captain from the base bought and hired my company to rewire it. Now during that time, I was playing music every weekend and on special occasions. One day while we were working the captain came up to me and said Freddie I have been to your dances and listen to you sing and my question is why haven’t you recorded any records. I explained my problem to him and said I just don’t have enough money left to pay to go to a recording studio and record. How much would it take to record two records a side and b side. I told him a thousand dollars. He said I will get you the thousand dollars with some conditions. First you must do it as soon as possible and you must give me the rights to the song you wrote called Living in the past. You must pay me back the money one hundred a month. The last request is that I want to be in the studio when you record. Which turned out to be a big hassle. I agreed to all of his request and called Joey Records in San Antonio and set up a recording date. I am not going to talk about what happened in the studio except to say the captain tried to take over the recording session and only stopped when the owner of the studio told him shut up and sit down or get the hell out, I used my regular band as musicians instead of hiring studio mus1c1ans. When it was received by the public the b side was an instant hit mostly because it was in English and Spanish After about a week it was number one in this area and stayed number one for six weeks. I started getting more and more jobs to go and play music. One Saturday morning Barbara and I went to the Derby Cafe located on Ave F and Ninth Street. As we walked in, I saw a couple of men sitting at a table. I noticed when we sat down and ordered breakfast, people would stop by the table and talk about my work but mostly my music. They would say how much they enjoyed my singing and how well the record was doing. My dad told me long ago treat people the way you want them to treat you. Because of that fact I always listened to what they had to say. After we had eaten, we talked a while longer than we got up to leave, I noticed two men got up too. I didn’t pay any attention to them and we got in the car and drove home. Now we lived on Valente Lane off of Nicholson Street and there was only one way in and one was out. Barbara said someone is following us. When we got to the house we went inside and Barbara went to the back of the house. All of a sudden, the door flew open and two men ran in, it was the two from the cafe. They started screaming give us your money and no one will get hurt. One had a hunting knife and the other what looked like a straight razor. About that time Barbara came back in the room and she was carrying a twelve-gauge pump shot gun. She told them you got 15 seconds to get out or you will die here, they took off running. Barbara followed them outside and shot up in the air but they were gone. We did not report it but I learned a lesson, when you go into your house lock the door. As my friend Tom says keep the faith and just continue to enjoy it while you can. Keep the faith and good times will come again just wait and see, good times will come again in sunny Del Rio Texas, My home town. Thanks to Victor Cirilo and the Val Verde County Library. A band that started out in 1970, and within ten years Queen gathered popularity and became one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world.
As some people think that rock stars dedicate their entire life to music and not good in studies. A big blow to such misconception is the Queen band. Except for Freddie Mercury, every other band member has a post graduate degree. A degree doesn’t make you smarter, but educated. In the U.K. charts alone, Queen managed to have a total of 26 years on the album charts, which is more than any other artist to date. In 1981, Queen set a new Argentine record in Buenos Aires for the most people at a single concert with 300 thousand fans attending the performance. And also only in the U.K. Queen’s “Greatest hits” album spent a total of 1,024 weeks in the chart. Estimated number of Queen’s albums sold are from 170 million to 300 million, making them one of the world’s best selling music artist. In September of 1982, the band performed their last two concerts in the U.S. with Freddie on lead vocals. They stopped touring North America as their popularity began to wane. their fall in popularity In North America has been attributed to a homophobia. At some shows of the bands 1980 American Tour, fans tossed disposable razor blades on stage: they didn’t like this identity of Freddie Mercury----what they didn’t like was as a brazenly gay rock”n”roll hero and they wanted Mercury to shave that off. Not much interesting information for a band that was so big in the 1980’s but they paid their dues. Find out more on “Queen” as we feature them as artist of the month on kwmc 1490 AM and the “Little Red Rooster Show”. also remember that all interesting facts and information are by Wendy Johnson and all shows are produced by Javier Martinez Sr. Rams, Queens soccer players help break KWMC voting recordsThe accomplishments of this year’s Del Rio High School soccer teams did not go unnoticed by the community.
When KWMC 1490 put out the word they were encouraging folks to vote for the station’s inaugural Del Rio High School Soccer Awards, the hope was for a turnout similar to the previous awards for football and basketball. Instead, the poll, which honored players from both the Rams and Queens soccer teams, broke the record for votes cast as more than 2,600 votes were cast for the top offensive, top defensive and the rising star for each team. The awards were presented by a bevy of local Del Rio High School sports supporters including representatives of the Del Rio Rams Soccer Booster Club, Lopez Roofing, Ashley Home Store, Cecil Atkission Ford, Offroad Recovery and Buffalo Wings and Rings. Queens Soccer On the Queens’ side, senior Ema Rojas was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Rojas was a scoring machine for the Queens, racking up 13 goals in 12 district matches. She was one of three Queens to have at least four goals during the district season and a key reason for Del Rio advancing to the playoffs after missing out last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior Jocelyn Martinez was named the Defensive Player of the year. Martinez has been the rock in the Queens defense since she joined the program. She was a first team all-district selection the last two years and her work in the classroom was also recognized as she was an academic all-district and academic all-state honoree. Freshman Andrea Sauceda was presented with the Queens Rising Star award. Sauceda did not get to play any sub-varsity games due to COVID-19 guidelines, so she was thrust into the varsity scene almost immediately. She did well enough to score a goal and earn an all-district honorable mention selection. Rams Soccer The Rams Offensive Player of the year was senior Angel Aldrete. Aldrete was the key to the Rams machine, leading the team in goals (8) and assists (9). His work wasn’t unrecognized by the district’s coaches as he was named the 30-6A Offensive Player of the Year. Senior Noe Trujillo was voted the Rams Defensive Player of the Year. Trujillo could easily have been the offensive player of the year, scoring six goals, but his work as a defender was invaluable, often tasked with shadowing the best player on the opposing team. Like Aldrete, Trujillo also earned all-district honors as he was named the district’s Defensive Player of the year. Junior Roberto Garza was voted the Rams Rising Star. Though Garza didn’t the publicity his teammates did, he was a steady defender who was another big part of the Rams sharing the district championship. He was also a first team, all-district selection this season. San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Ric Smith was also recognized at the awards ceremony as he was presented with the KWMC Alfredo Garza Lifetime Achievement Award. As the times continue to seem to improve so do the releases of New Movies and attendance at local movie theaters all around the country.
