San Felipe Del Rio CISD Introducing the redesigned Del Rio High School
What began as part of a discussion during the 2016 Facilities and Operations Citizens Committee and later part of a proposed project on the 2017 Bond Election is now approaching its last phase of completion. The full renovation of the cafeteria and commons area is just one part of the total Del Rio High School Redesign Project. Major work on the DRHS Cafeteria/Commons Area began in June 2019. The steep ramps have been replaced with ADA compliant stairs, a wall of lockers was removed and replaced with a new kiosk and seating area for students to grab a quick snack, catch up on reading, or even recharge their laptops and cell phones. For added convenience, Frontera Construction also crafted built-in microwave stations just steps from the cafeteria seating area. The old gypsum wall that separated the cafeteria and the teacher’s lounge from the gymnasium and the stage area has been demolished and replaced with a clear safety glass wall. This feature created an open and expanded feel to the cafeteria, offering a spectacular clear view into the gym. On the opposite side of the cafeteria, rows of lockers were also removed and the retaining wall received a sharp upgraded look. Large screen television monitors have also been mounted on this wall giving the campus wide capability to display featured news, presentations and announcements, or even watch a live-streamed event. Through the work of Nobles Construction, the decades-old ceiling and wall coverings were completely cleared away. Now, the renovated DRHS Cafeteria/Commons Area showcases fresh paint, natural wood moldings, and new acoustical panels. Old lamps have been replaced with modern and energy efficient lighting giving the area a much brighter look. This past April, just after schools in Texas closed due to COVID-19, a substantial amount of work began to transform the old pebble stone floor throughout the main building. Years of wear and layers of wax were removed and have since been replaced with brighter and easier-to-manage tile flooring. The DRHS Cafeteria/Commons Area is now in its final stages of completion. SFDRCISD has given the campus a new look and a fresh start; ready to welcome our students back today and future generations tomorrow. Congratulations DRHS on your new look on your 50th anniversary!
