Marvin Gaye started out with a group called the Marquees, then changing their to the Moonglows. Although many people say Marvin never recorded vocals with the Moonglows that is incorrect. He did record some vocals but you won't find any of the recordings on his greatest hits or rarities albums. The time with the Moonglows was short lived and Marvin returned to his home town of Washington D.C. and teamed up with another doowop group called the Rainbows.
Finally being introduced to Motown records Marvin started out as a session drummer and recorded with some of the biggest artists for Motown. Not everyone at Motown was so easy going about Marvin's habit of smoking Marijuana in the recording studio, he would spend time brainstorming ideas for marijuana advertisements. One particular ad Marvin came up with was "Try the Marvin Redeye brand, friends and neighbors. No sticks, no seeds,no stems just clean smooth smoke. And talk about a lucky find,a Motown memorabilia collector came across Marvin Gaye's passport from 1964 tucked inside an old record sleeve. He made his discovery after buying a collection of lp's and singles from a family of a deceased former Motown musician. The passport is valued at a minimum of $20,000 by appraiser Laura Wooley.
