Severe Storm Causes Major Damage to Cienegas Home;  Family Safe but Facing Difficult Recovery

By Texas Times Staff | Del Rio, Texas

DEL RIO, TX — A powerful storm that moved through Del Rio Tuesday night caused significant damage to a residence in the San Felipe area, leaving one family with severe structural damage to their home but thankful that no one was injured.
Texas Times spoke with Valeria Coronado, whose home on Cedros Street suffered major roof collapse during the storm as heavy rain and hail impacted the city.
According to Coronado, the damage began with a leak before the situation quickly worsened.
“We started seeing water coming in, and then the roof from three rooms  the restroom and dining room just fell,” she said. “We tried to clean it and fix it, but it didn’t stop raining.”
Coronado said the collapse happened suddenly while the family was inside the home. Fortunately, everyone was safe, including her son who has special needs.
“My son usually sits where the roof from the dining room fell,” she explained. “Thank God we had him sitting in the kitchen at that moment. If he had been there, it could have been much worse.”
With rain continuing to pour into the home after the roof collapsed, the family rushed to save important belongings.
“We tried to grab papers and anything valuable, but everything got wet,” Coronado said. “Right now we’re trying to clean, put clothes in bags, and wash what we can because everything is soaked.”
Coronado said she called 911 for assistance during the storm but was advised to evacuate. However, flooding and road closures in the Cienegas area made it difficult for the family to leave.
“I live in the Cienegas area, and both roads near my house were closed, so there was no way to get out,” she said.
The American Red Cross visited the family the following day to provide assistance, but the home remains heavily damaged and in need of repairs.
A GoFundMe account has been started to help the family with repairs and replacing essential items. Community members who wish to help in person may also drop off donations at the family’s home.

Donation Location:
64 Cerdo Street  Del Rio, Texas
Despite the hardship, Coronado remains hopeful and grateful that her family is safe.
“We just want to fix our home and move forward,” she said.
Community members wishing to help can find the donation link posted with this article on the KWMC 1490AM social media page.
