Hola! Hello everyone. As we head into March, I would like to bring you up to date on a few Council actions: First, I’m beyond excited that Julio’s Corn Tortilla Chip is on its way to becoming the official Chip of the State of Texas. Let me share with you how this started.
Mr. Monti Van Brunt who is the National Sales Director for Julios and is based in Dallas met by accident my former District Director for U.S Representative Will Hurd, Daniel Mezza. So I’m at home and get a call from both of them at 9:30 p.m. at night, asking me if I would like to see JULIOS become the official Chip of the State of Texas. I learned that Julios became the Official Chip of the U.S. Air Force in 2018 and there is not any community event that you don’t see donations of Julio’s Chips. Of course, I said, let’s do this – let’s make it happen. So the next day I spoke with the Mayor and City Manager who pledged their full support. So now I’m spearheading the effort. First step was the Proclamation on Tuesday Feb. 24 by City Council proclaiming Julio’s Corn Tortilla Chip Day. On March 10, City Council agenda will have the Ordinance making JULIOs Chip the Official Chip of the City of Del Rio. Know that behind the scenes work in ongoing. A draft bill has already been sent by me to State Rep Eddie Morales Office in Austin. Lobbyist Lynlie Hurd, wife of our former Congressman Will Hurd, is already reaching out to lawmakers to support passage of the bill. The City of Del Rio is also utilizing the avenue of our City Austin lobbyists to help promote passage of this bill. Updates will be posted to keep you informed! In other Council action, Council approved for the City Manager to negotiate a contract with FWD Architects for architectural services for the Animal Services Shelter Building project. This is critically important as Chief of Police Mr. Ramirez noted various State compliance problems with the existing shelter. In addition, City Council had previously directed City Manager to reduce the cost of building a new shelter by finding suitable and affordable options. Note that this will not be the $3 million dollar shelter originally planned but a shelter that will meet in a humane way the needs of the animals that arrive at the shelter. Hoping to establish a no-kill shelter in the future. Grateful, grateful. I am very grateful for our business community and local organizations that come together to make Del Rio a better and safer place to live – improving the quality of life. Not because they have to, but because they want to. First, shout out to Five Star Electric for donating two 220 power outlets valued at $1000.00 at Rotary Pocket Park. We also had a donation of sod valued at $2543 and a scoreboard valued at $5412.50 for installation at Pop Word by Del Rio Little League. Sponsors for the sod and scoreboard include The Bank and Trust, Del Rio Veterinary Diagnostic Hospital, Frontera Construction, HTeaO, Donna & John Weston and Becky and Ira West. City of Del Rio staff will assist in these upgrades. City Council approved both of these donations. Also approved was $50,000 for Golf Course improvements to include placement of sod in holes 4 and 7 and treatment of nematodes and fungus at the San Felipe Springs Golf Course. Why is this important? The SFCC is home to our local Del Rio High School golfers who need a safe and good place to train in preparation to represent us in competition/tournaments. Many local organizations use the SFCC to host golf tournaments for scholarships such as the Border Federal Credit Union, Autism Awareness and San Felipe Exes Country Club. SFCC members pay a monthly membership fee and these organizations pay for using the greens. We must also take care of this area with the beautiful flowing San Felipe Creek. In case you missed it, you can catch the buzz of Julio’s Corn Tortilla Chip and the above Council actions and much more by clicking on CITY OF DEL RIO GOVERNMENT Facebook page. Thank you for the privilege of serving you. I work every day to earn your trust. Carmen Gutierrez Councilwoman At Large Place A |
