A band that started out in 1970, and within ten years Queen gathered popularity and became one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world.
As some people think that rock stars dedicate their entire life to music and not good in studies. A big blow to such misconception is the Queen band. Except for Freddie Mercury, every other band member has a post graduate degree. A degree doesn’t make you smarter, but educated. In the U.K. charts alone, Queen managed to have a total of 26 years on the album charts, which is more than any other artist to date. In 1981, Queen set a new Argentine record in Buenos Aires for the most people at a single concert with 300 thousand fans attending the performance. And also only in the U.K. Queen’s “Greatest hits” album spent a total of 1,024 weeks in the chart. Estimated number of Queen’s albums sold are from 170 million to 300 million, making them one of the world’s best selling music artist. In September of 1982, the band performed their last two concerts in the U.S. with Freddie on lead vocals. They stopped touring North America as their popularity began to wane. their fall in popularity In North America has been attributed to a homophobia. At some shows of the bands 1980 American Tour, fans tossed disposable razor blades on stage: they didn’t like this identity of Freddie Mercury----what they didn’t like was as a brazenly gay rock”n”roll hero and they wanted Mercury to shave that off. Not much interesting information for a band that was so big in the 1980’s but they paid their dues. Find out more on “Queen” as we feature them as artist of the month on kwmc 1490 AM and the “Little Red Rooster Show”. also remember that all interesting facts and information are by Wendy Johnson and all shows are produced by Javier Martinez Sr. Rams, Queens soccer players help break KWMC voting recordsThe accomplishments of this year’s Del Rio High School soccer teams did not go unnoticed by the community.
When KWMC 1490 put out the word they were encouraging folks to vote for the station’s inaugural Del Rio High School Soccer Awards, the hope was for a turnout similar to the previous awards for football and basketball. Instead, the poll, which honored players from both the Rams and Queens soccer teams, broke the record for votes cast as more than 2,600 votes were cast for the top offensive, top defensive and the rising star for each team. The awards were presented by a bevy of local Del Rio High School sports supporters including representatives of the Del Rio Rams Soccer Booster Club, Lopez Roofing, Ashley Home Store, Cecil Atkission Ford, Offroad Recovery and Buffalo Wings and Rings. Queens Soccer On the Queens’ side, senior Ema Rojas was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Rojas was a scoring machine for the Queens, racking up 13 goals in 12 district matches. She was one of three Queens to have at least four goals during the district season and a key reason for Del Rio advancing to the playoffs after missing out last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior Jocelyn Martinez was named the Defensive Player of the year. Martinez has been the rock in the Queens defense since she joined the program. She was a first team all-district selection the last two years and her work in the classroom was also recognized as she was an academic all-district and academic all-state honoree. Freshman Andrea Sauceda was presented with the Queens Rising Star award. Sauceda did not get to play any sub-varsity games due to COVID-19 guidelines, so she was thrust into the varsity scene almost immediately. She did well enough to score a goal and earn an all-district honorable mention selection. Rams Soccer The Rams Offensive Player of the year was senior Angel Aldrete. Aldrete was the key to the Rams machine, leading the team in goals (8) and assists (9). His work wasn’t unrecognized by the district’s coaches as he was named the 30-6A Offensive Player of the Year. Senior Noe Trujillo was voted the Rams Defensive Player of the Year. Trujillo could easily have been the offensive player of the year, scoring six goals, but his work as a defender was invaluable, often tasked with shadowing the best player on the opposing team. Like Aldrete, Trujillo also earned all-district honors as he was named the district’s Defensive Player of the year. Junior Roberto Garza was voted the Rams Rising Star. Though Garza didn’t the publicity his teammates did, he was a steady defender who was another big part of the Rams sharing the district championship. He was also a first team, all-district selection this season. San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Ric Smith was also recognized at the awards ceremony as he was presented with the KWMC Alfredo Garza Lifetime Achievement Award. As the times continue to seem to improve so do the releases of New Movies and attendance at local movie theaters all around the country.

Face To Face: Alfredo "Fred" CarranzaThe Texas Times recently caught up with Del Rio City Councilperson-District 1, Fred Carranza, to discuss municipal business. While Carranza is looking forward to the potential implementation of future projects — constructing a greatly needed new community gym and an additional international bridge — there are still some issues and ongoing undertakings of immediate concern to folks. Carranza graciously answered our questions. [The interview has been edited due to length restrictions. TT: What is the city’s singular, primary issue and the plan to address it? FC: The primary issue I think that we’re currently facing…the Covid, of course. We have to talk about Covid, right? There’s no way around that. But I think we’ve done a pretty good job with it now that we’re getting enough vaccines. I know in the last couple of weeks we’ve gotten several thousand vaccines…we need to get as many people as we can two doses…we’ve got every kind of vaccine available. But that’s been a struggle because everybody needed it at first. We were trying to get the elderly done. Now we’ve opened it up to everybody…and I’m hoping by July that we’ll be pretty well caught up with the majority of citizens who want to get it already—vaccinated. TT: What is the status of the road and infrastructure improvements? FC: On the streets, I think that of course, there’s more work to do. That the city as a whole, we’ve invested millions of dollars in getting not just the streets but the infrastructure renewed or upgraded…the last five years I think we invested probably $20 million on streets…we still have some pockets and then you have to start redoing streets probably up here on the north side that are already getting a little older. We’ve worked on San Felipe quite a bit…we’re gonna be doing a bunch of streets on the south part of town because they’re in the greatest need right now. We did get the Qualia relief route done. That was long needed, and that was a project that had been there for 10 years or longer. I came on council and it was one of my priorities is to get that done and we were able to accomplish that with the support of the council. As we leave these projects behind longer and longer, the price gets more expensive and more expensive. TT: Other significant issues... FC: We’re also dealing with immigration…all of the immigrants that are coming across the border and how we’re gonna deal with that. The Chihuahua Center, the church group that’s out there, is doing an excellent job. We support them…we’ve been able to handle the numbers that we have now, but we’re always more worried that they’re gonna drop off more than the 100-150 a day. If they come and drop off 200 or 300, we probably don’t have enough transportation to get them out on the same day. Then we have to start housing people, feeding people, and that turns into a bigger problem…the federal government, I hope, will give us some help…at least reimburse us for the monies that we’re spending on a problem that really is what I believe is a federal problem and not the local City of Del Rio problem. We need to spend some money on a new city hall…many years that’s been pushed down the list…that’s gonna cost us about $15 million. We’re gonna need to invest some money…on the generators that we just had the big problem in the snowstorm…our wastewater treatment plant was down, the substation for the sewer system were down. That’s gonna cost us several million dollars. It’s a balancing act. Do we keep just doing the streets, or do we start taking care of some of the other things? I, for myself, feel like we need to take care of some of these other items. ¡CRISTO ESTÁ VIVO! ¡ESTOY LLAMADO A UNA VIDA NUEVA!Abril 2021
Sady Pbro. A POINT OF VIEW: HAVE A GREAT TIMEAs we get closer to the end and farther away from our beginning we start to wonder if we’ve had enough fun in our lives?
We wonder if we’ve done enough, seen enough, been enough places and made enough friends away from our regular circle of comfort. A while back I was thinking so much about this that I even went as far as creating a Facebook page called Racing The End. It’s a hodge·podge of writings, a journal if you will of stuff that’s not only going on now in my life but things that I’d like do and plan to do. Many of us have this going on in one way or another. Some in the form or an actual written journal, others in the form of a diary and if your like me you plaster all over the Internet for everyone to judge you because you just don’t have enough grief going on in your life. I share stuff like my medical issues. This is an excerpt from May 2020; “I spent an hour on the phone with a Doctor Today. They just changed my Diabetes Meds and Now they want to add an Extra one that would cost me $157 a month Co-Pay. Who can afford that? Not Me. Plus they want to add a Statin too. That would make it TEN Pills I would be taking a day. Enough is Enough. I’ve just been to lazy to do the right thing. The Right Thing in My Case is Getting Back and Sticking With a KETO like diet Plan until my Diabetes disappears. YES it can be done. I’ve done it 3 times before just Failed to Commit. This Time with your Prayers and GOD’s will I Will Not Fail. Lunch today was a small steak and a salad. For dinner tonight a KETO Shake, and so it starts. Pray for me.” Wow, talk about pouring everything out there but it’s not all like that. Lots of it is about fun stuff I do as well. Like going to Vegas recently. “Our trip to Vegas last week was Awesome except for while we were there they had a Cold Front move through and it was 40 Degrees every single morning. We flew economy class on American Airlines and I’ve got to say it was not the best experience. The seats were tight and rather uncomfortable. On one flight the sound on the seat Monitor did not work and on another flight they had No Earbuds available because no one loaded them on the flight in Las Vegas. We’ll be back in May and are flying United this time. With any luck the seats will be a little larger and more comfortable. We’ll see.” Do your self a favor and start writing your own race. It’s liberating and can make you feel better. In case your a Vegasite like me here are a few pictures from our recent trip. Live, write, travel, have as great a time as you can, you’ll love it. Just another Point of View. ARTIST OF THE MONTH: THE MONKEESOn September 8-10, 1965 the Daily Variety newspaper and the Hollywood Reporter ran an ad in the paper to look for a cast of members for an up coming TV series.
It read, Madness!! Auditions. Folk and Roll musicians- singers or acting roles in TV series. Running parts for 4 insane boys, ages 17-21. Have courage to work. Must come down to interview. Out of 437 applicants, three were chosen for the cast, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Mickey Dolenz. Michael Nesmith was the only one who saw the ad in the paper. Peter Tork was the last one to be chosen. Davy Jones was already signed to a long term contract to appear in TV and films with Screen-Gems and Columbia pictures which would be their record label in September of 1964. Stories have always been told that the Monkees never played their own instruments, but actually they did but their producers didn’t let them. Mike Nesmith was a skilled guitarist and bassist and Peter Tork played several stringed instruments and keyboards and also Mickey knew how to play the guitar and Davy Jones could play the drums. This is the band that was created and we know them as “The Monkees”. Davy Jones was picked as the lead vocalist which the other three didn’t like, but Nesmith said that it was Mickey Dolenz voice that was distinctive in the band. And yet after so many rumors, the Monkees did play their own instruments. But remember they were hired as actors not musicians, that’s why the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame will not induct them in the Hall of Fame. Another great rumor is that Charles Manson had also auditioned for an acting role but that is not true, Charlie was serving a federal prison sentence at the time in 1965. Find out more on the “Monkees” as we feature them as artist of the month, on the Little Red Rooster Show and KWMC’s Classic Hit Station 1490 AM. And as always all information and known facts are by Wendy Johnson and all Artist of the Month shows are produced by Javier Martinez Sr. HOWDY
Earlier this month I received a call from a lady here in Del Rio and she told me about the following article. This article was published in the Galveston Daily News Friday December 11, 1891. I have lived here all my 78 years of life and never heard about this. The following is some of what happened and why it happened. HE CONFESSED HIS GUILT AND DIED GAME When he ascended the flight of steps three windows gave him a view of the crowd below. He asks and received permission to address the crowd. He said I AM ABOUT TO BE CONDEMNED FOR A CRIME OF WHICH I ACKNOWLEDGE I AM GUILTY. I killed FRANK WILKINS AND I AM SORRY I DID IT. He said the gentleman he killed was mean to Mexicans and in a heat of passion killed him. I am sorry that Mr. Wilton was also killed because he was a good man and treated the Mexicans well. I am prepared and willing to go. I am not afraid, the only regret I have is leaving my parents in such trouble. He talked about five minutes. He spoke very clear and firmly. He was affected by the crowd, some crying but he continued talking. When pictures were taken, he asked that only his mother and father would see them. When he finished speaking, he ascended the steps to the trap door. He asks for one last cigarette and while smoking continued talking very calmy. When he finished smoking, he stepped on the trap door and said I am ready. As he was being tied as they usually do, he turned and bade goodbye to some. He placed the noose around his head and drew it up and said it fits real nicely. At first, he objected to the black hood but finally consented. The trap door was sprung about 11:30 and nine minutes later he was pronounced dead. They left him hanging there until 12 and then the body was taken down and turned over to the family for burial. Before the trap door was sprung the priest prayed and blessed him. There were windows on three sides of the room. About 25 were in the room and two to three hundred people outside, the crowd was very quiet. The article went on to tell how and where the crime was committed. On December the 8th 1890 two bodies were discovered at the store that was run by the owner of the ranch, it was located on their property. The man had been dead for some time and the indications pointed to three Mexicans who were employees at the ranch. There was no known reason for the crime, although a lot of people new the way the man treated Mexicans and it was thought to be a murder of revenge. It was soon discovered that the three Mexicans had fled to Mexico. There was a lot of time and effort to finding and arresting these three men. After several months they were able to capture only one of the men and he was brought back for trail. He was first tried for the murder of Mr. Milton but was acquitted. He was then tried for the murder of Mr. Wilkins and found guilty and sentenced to death. The other two men accused of this crime were never caught and were never heard from again. He met his fate coolly and his family made arrangements to play music on the day of his death. I was not able to write all of this article but I wanted to do it as close as possible for a reason. At one time or another we have all been so upset for some reason that things could have happened to push you or anybody past the edge and when that happens people get hurt or sometimes die. I have always said, treat people the way you want to be treated. Remember as things are slowly getting better wear you mask and give people the respect you want from them, enjoy my home town of DEL RIO Texas and GOD bless each and every one of you. Thanks to the Val Verde County Library and Victor Cirilo. Leianna Jimenez playing for Texas A&M International University in LaredoPlaying sports at the next level isn’t an easy task for any high school athlete.
According to the official NCAA website, ncaa.org, the odds of a high schooler playing sports collegiately are typically less than 10 percent. In the sport of girls soccer, the number sits around 7.2 percent. According to a survey conducted during the 2018-19 school year, of the 394,105 girls that played high school soccer, 28,310 went on to play in the NCAA. It breaks down as follows: 2.4 percent went onto play NCAA Division I, which is the more famous schools like the University of Texas or Texas A&M or schools such as those. 1.9 percent went onto play NCAA Division II, which includes schools such as Angelo State, St. Mary’s and University of Texas-Permian Basin. 2.9 percent went onto play NCAA Division III, which includes schools like Concordia, Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State. One Del Rio High alumnus is finding success at the NCAA Division III level with the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils. Freshman Leianna Jimenez, who initially signed a letter of intent to play with Hardin-Simmons University in February 2020, is seeing significant minutes with the Dustdevils and already has her first game-winning goal, which came in overtime against St. Mary’s University March 10. According to a report from the official Dustdevils website, the goal came off a free kick when the ball was struck by Valeria Macias into the St. Mary’s box. From there, Vivian Martinez was able to find Jimenez who nailed the goal less than three minutes into overtime. Though the goal was her only tally of the season thus far, Jimenez has seen action in all six of the Dustdevils’ matches this year. She’s played at least 20 minutes in every match and played a career-high 63 minutes against the University of Texas-Permian Basin on March 17. Though her final season at Del Rio High was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jimenez still made a big impact. She was named the District 29-6A Offensive Player of the Year. It capped a career in which she was an all-district selection each of her four years with the Queens including being named the district’s Newcomer of the Year in 2017.
