Here we are again, the beginning of a new year and everyone’s thoughts are once again on those dreaded new years resolutions. At the top of this list, as is every year, is losing weight. Yes, that resolution so many of us make every year and just can’t seem to accomplish to the degree that we have to keep making it over and over again for years to come. I ran into a friend of mine the other day that had the lap band procedure not long ago and has lost 60 pounds in six months. He looked good but he still didn’t look happy. Sadly if you get on the right eating regimen and start moving just a little more every day than you normally do, if your a big guy like me, you can loose 60 pounds in three months without any surgery. My friend said that at first you can only eat about a little more than a thumb nail size portion, but wait, he said he found a way to cheat. Apparently if you drink water after every bite it just goes right down. So what’s the point, at that rate, six months later you’ll be back to where you started. So the jury is still out on whether having that type of surgery is for me. I had another friend who had her stomach stapled. A year later she was thin as a rail and very happy. Five years later she had regained all the weight she had lost and then some except now she had a scar from her naval to her chest and was still paying on the $40,000 it had originally cost her to get the surgery in the first place. I just can’t see myself being in either one of those situations. I have to admit I like food. I like good food, and like my friend with the lap band I’d be looking for all those little ways around the ability not to eat. So I think I’ll just keep trying to limit what I eat, try to make better choices of the things I eat, and try to get physically moving more than I have this year. With any luck that will get me on my way to looking and feeling better. Try it, you just may find it will work for you too.
