The Supremes Artist of the month, will feature the music of diana ross and the supremes on May the 8th at 10:30 a.m. on the little red rooster show and KWMC the mighty 1490.A female singing group and the premier act of Motown records during the 1960's the Supremes started out in Detroit Michigan in 1959, when they were known as the Primettes. They were the most commercially successful of Mowtowns acts and are,to date, Americas most successful vocal group founding members Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Diana Ross and Betty Mcglown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public Housing Project in Detroit, formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes(with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptaions) Barbara Martin replaced McGlowen in 1960, and the goup signed with Motown the following year as the Supremes.Martin left the act in 1962,and Ross,Ballard and Wilson carried on as a trio. As the Primettes the frequently visited the Hitsville U.S.A. recording studio everyday after school, eventually convinced Berry Gordy to allow them to contribute hand claps and background vocals for the songs of other Motown artists includind Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells and the Temptaions. On January 1961,Gordy finally agreed to sign the grls to his record label-under one condition that they change their name of the group. Berry gave Ballard a list of names to choose from that included suggestions such as "The Darleens' "The Sweet P's' "The Melodees' "The Royaltones" and "The Jewelettes.Ballard chose The Supremes,a name, that Diana Ross disliked as she felt it was too masculine. Nevertheless on January15 the group signed with Motown Studios as the Supremes.the rest is history. So what were the Supremes being called around the Motown Studios as a joke?.Between 1961 and 1963 they released eight singles, none of which charted in the Top 40 positions of the Billboard Hot 100. they attempted to compensate for their lack of hits by taking on any work available at the studio.
