Well the month of July 2020 will be remembered here in Del Rio for a long time. This virus that has taken over Del Rio has got a lot of people either confused or afraid, maybe a little of both. On July the 15th the mayor stated that we were up to 11 deaths and that there was no room at the local hospital and even in San Antonio they were not taking any cases of the virus from Del Rio. I believe what surprised a lot of people was when the mayor stated that they were trying to locate a refrigerated trailer to put the people that had passed away in because there was no more room, not even in the funeral homes. I am not sure what it will take for the people to realize that this is very serious. It took me back to the flood of 98 when they had to bring a refrigerated trailer for the people that were lost in the flood. Driving down highway 90 East I noticed the barricades in front of the entrance to the blue hole or to what we all called my favorite swimming place the pump house. It is sad to see that we have reached that point that we are not even able to go to the park and go swimming. For as long as I can remember the parks were always full during the summer time and especially on the fourth of July. When I was young, we would get up early and eat breakfast usually cereal, make a sandwich and head out to the San Felipe creek. We would spend the day laughing, swimming, goofing off just enjoying being with good friends. My best friend back then was Roberto Diaz. We went everywhere together. We got our first bike at the same time then later on we got a car about the same time. Robert lived on Ware St. and I lived in the San Jose project. Our other friends that went with us some times were Salvador Torres Tobie, Danny Mesa, Jimmy Flores, and others it was a good time to be alive and we did not even realize it. I worked for Rudy Corbinas and Robert worked for Ross Drug Store but we spent a lot of time together. Roberto passed away in 1999. I remember Victor Camposano told me that he would go and dive in the San Felipe creek to get golf balls and then sell them to people that played golf to get a little money to buy some thing to eat or drink. I have not seen or spoke to Victor in a while but I was told he is like me with a few health problems. What really impressed me about Victor was he is very smart and he knows a lot about the way Del Rio was back in the good old days and a lot of people do not know that he knows a lot about the bible. At one time we would talk almost every day, so if you want some history about Del Rio talk to Victor, he remembers things that I forgot or never knew. I can recall the time when you could walk down Main Street and have trouble walking because there were so many people. We would stop at the entrance to Kress just to smell the popcorn that they were making and selling Then we would cross the street to the city café I believe that was the name. I know that a man named Harry Pierce was the owner. They made good hamburgers. Then we would go across the street to the Rita theatre since Roberto and I worked in the early morning cleaning the Drive-In theatre we were able to get in free to any movie we wanted to see. He has been gone a long time but I still visit his grave and still talk to him. At night we would go to San Felipe to pick fights. Since we lived in Chihuahua we were really not welcome in that part of town and me being gringo just added to the problems we were faced with. Let me finish this by saying you never forget things that happen to you when you were growing up, but right now we live in a Del Rio like I have never seen. We are faced with a deadly enemy we cannot see but it is there so we must learn to face it and deal with it. Listen to what he city and county leaders say and let’s get through this. To do that we must work together and pray that the good lord can help us get through this time. Stay safe take care and remember wear your mask when you leave your home so that soon we will be able to walk the streets and enjoy my home town Del Rio Texas GOD BLESS. Thanks to the Victor Cirilo and the Val Verde County Library. HOWDY
This past June the seventh I turned 78 years old. Looking back at my life there has been some good times and bad times. I recall how I got my class A driver’s license and started driving a dump truck for Val Verde County pct.2 at that time I recall that Thomas Rose was the County Commissioner had a place where we stayed during the week. It was located about a mile past the store at Loma Alta Tx. You could not really call it a house, there was no inside plumbing, no water inside, there was only two rooms. One was the kitchen area with a table with six chairs and a wood stove. The other room was wide open with cots where we slept. In the summer time you would sweat so bad and be so hot you could not sleep and then in the winter it was so cold at night you had to sleep with your clothes on and with all of the quilts and blankets you could stand. If it was 30 degrees in Del Rio it was 20 degrees in the area where we were. Outside the kitchen door which by the way was the only door it had there was a faucet where you could drink water or wash up whatever the case might be. We worked on county roads from what they called the lower county road all the way up to the county line going towards Sonora Tx. I enjoyed working outside and I enjoyed learning to drive the dump truck but I hated the place where we had to stay. I would argue with the foreman that the county should be ashamed of themselves allowing those living conditions. Years later they built a new place up off of the highway and although I never saw it, I heard it was really set up good. I started off as a dump truck driver but later on the county bought a Caterpillar front end loader and the person that was the operator did not follow instructions and got hurt. When we got him to the hospital here in Del Rio, he told the foreman he would not go back. They offered it to me and I took it. Once I learned the do’s and do nots it was a hell of a machine it was fun. There were a few things that happened during the time I worked there. One time we were eating lunch along side of a county road and a group of men that were not here legally stopped and ask for water. We gave them water and gave them food. They talked among themselves that they were going to rob us and take one of the dump trucks. I understood what they said and made some excuse to get something out of the truck and went and got a 22 rifle we carried for snakes. They took off running and I shot up in the air and let them go. One time I was loading the dump trucks with caliche and I dug up a nest of copper head snakes, they started crawling up on the machine and I had to get off of the loader and get inside a truck. We had to use gasoline to get rid of them and we quit using that pit. There was another time we came to work and when I opened the cab to get inside the loader there was a bobcat. He jumped at me and I moved and he hit on my shoulder and kept going. On every other Friday we would work until 3 o’clock and then drive in to Del Rio and sit on the grass at the court house and wait for the foreman to come out with our checks. It was not a lot of money but I was young and thought I was rich. I was off every weekend to play music and live life such as it was. I have lived in Del Rio all my life and as my life is coming to the end. I feel it more every day I give thanks to god that I was born and raised in Del Rio Texas. How much more time do I have only god knows but I am proud to say that Del Rio Texas is my home town. Stay safe and take care of yourself and your family. God bless. Thanks to the Val Verde County Library and Victor Cirilo. The months of April and May were something
we never thought we would witness in our life time. Looking back to this time in 2019 who would ever think that we would have to go through it. I remember as a teenager I remember a time that almost all places of business were well stocked. You could walk into any store and they would greet you and try to help in any way they could. There was a time that if you were seen walking around town with a mask you would be stopped and ask why you were wearing one. Now they want to know why you are not wearing one. Years ago we were doing a job and they were knocking down some interior walls made of adobe. The dust was so thick we were all wearing glasses and masks. There was a store near by and I went there to get us something to drink. It didnt even occur to me to remove the mask and i went inside to get some water and sodas. I was in there for five minutes or so and when I walked out there was two police cars in front of the store. The reason they were there was because I was wearing a mask. What i have seen in the last month or so makes me wonder are we ready for something like that. People arguing over items long lines, empty shelves and people just grabbing things out of other peoples hands, Then there is the man who was working day and night trying to keep us safe. I am referring to our County Judge MR.LEWIS O WENS. Every time he made a public statement he would say that he was part of a team trying to make sure we were safe. I saw various comments about the comments made on radio and facebook and also we should mention radio station K.W.M.C.1490AM. MR. MEMO GARZA, MR. JAVIER MARTINEZ, JAVIER MARTINEZ JR., DALINDA RAMIREZ at the station controls. Are we out of danger now or should we take it one day at a time until we are sure that the crisis is passed. Continue to listen and heed the directions giving by our leaders. Continue to listen to K.W.M.C. for all the new developments. I am looking forward to the time when we can enjoy our beautiful city. Go walking down on SAN FELIPE CREEK, Take a walk down Main St. visit the Museum, the winery, Lake Amistad and so many more places to and see here in my home town DEL RIO TEXAS. GOD BLESS HOWDY
Well here we are looking at the month of April. I would like to first take a moment to congratulate Mr. JAVIER MARTINEZ for wining the best of the best for 2019 as the radio personality of the year MR. MARTINEZ is with the radio station K.W.M.C..IT was well deserved and Javier has been in radio for many years. Now for looking back. This month I would like to talk about my children. I have two children who live here in Del Rio and I can say with sadness they never come see me. One of them works nights and calls me on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday never on Friday or Saturday. My daughter never calls or comes by. I have three grandchildren here in Del Rio but they never have the time to come and visit me. They never call me I have to call them. I have a son in New Braunfels Texas that just recently started talking to me again after three years or ever since his mother died. He has a son that is in his late teens and I was never around him when he was growing up. I have a son in Waco who calls me once a month just to keep in touch. My son Michael who passed away 2017 had three brothers from his moms first marriage I was around those boys while they were growing up but since Michael passed away, they have not been to my house at all. Now why have I stated all of this is to look back when I was young. I visited my mother three or four times a week. My dad and mom were divorced and both remarried but every Friday I would take my dad out to eat and then to the movies. He loved western movies as did I/ my mom was so sick the last ten years of her life that she never wanted to go out to eat or to the movies. She asks me to get her a color tv and I did. It was the first color t.v. she ever had. Her favorite singer was ELVIS PRESLEY Back in those good old days on every holiday all of my family, uncles, aunts. Cousins brothers and sisters would come to my house for the holidays. One time on the fourth of July was on a Friday and we partied to Sunday night. Lots of food music horseshoes and cards. A lot of old friends would show up and everyone was welcome. We would sit up a recliner for my mom so that when she got tired, she could rest. Things started to change when I started getting recondition from singing and started getting bookings a lot of times away from home. Then when I started recording music, I was gone a lot of times on birthdays holidays and anniversaries and such. I have to admit I was not there for my children or my wife or family. All I could see was my star over the horizon and I was determined to get it no matter the cost. One time I was set to go play some where and be gone for a week and my wife ask me what I wanted for my birthday which was in that week and like a fool I said how about a trail separation. she said or you sure that’s what you want and stupid me said yes. She asks me what can I take with me. I told her take what you want. When I came back the house was empty and there was an old fold up cot with a note on it that said you told me I could take what I wanted and I wanted it all. We love you and hope you find what you are looking for. That night I sat out on the porch and wrote the song country superstar and old McDonalds farm is not a home. That was a long time ago and now that I am an old man, I wish I could have seen and understood that family is and should be the number one priority in your life. That old saying YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW is so true. I didn’t have time for my kids now they have no time for me. The only thing that I am thankful for is that Dalinda is here with me and helps me with things that I can no longer do by myself. In closing let me say if you have a career you are trying to achieve remember do not forget your family, they are the most important part of your life. Take them down and walk the Dora ALCALA WALKING TRAIL. take them to the whitehead museum to the winery out to Lake Amistad and so many other places here to see in my home town of Del Rio Texas. God bless. Thanks to Victor Cirilo and the Val Verde County Library. HOWDY Well January is over and now here we are in the last of Feb. January was a big month for me in birthdays. My mom’s birthday was the second of January. She passed away in April of 1981. My brother Gerald aka Boogie’s birthday was on the 15th. He passed away in 2004. My son John turned 46 years old on the 21st, he has been in the New Braunfels police department for twenty-two years he is now a captain he also has a real estate company in New Braunfels. My son Michael birthday was on the 28th. He passed away in 2017 at the age of thirty-two years old. It was and still is a big change in my life. You are not supposed to bury your children but you have to deal with it and go on. I still struggle with it almost every day. I hope that on Valentine’s day you received a big box of candy maybe some flowers, a dinner maybe a movie. If so give thanks to God that you have someone in your life. Being alone is very hard to cope with. LOOKING back when I was in the old Garfield school. Or even back to where I started school in 1948 49 school year at the old North Heights school on Main St that has since been torn down. I can recall buying Valentines for each one of your class mates. Some people would bring candy but my family did not have any money so I was just barely able to buy valentines cards. At that time, we lived at 304 E. Fourth St. and I would walk to school everyday. In 1955 we moved to the San Jose housing project. We lived at 25-6 then I went to Garfield school on Las Vacas St. right next to Marcy Martin football field. That was where the Del Rio wild cats played ball. When I think about the wildcats I remember names like Bubba Hayes, Kimble Mitchell. Later on, when the opened memorial school on main St. across from the fairgrounds I remember Coach Bowers, Coach Bradley the principal Mr. Brown, Mrs. Stanley, Mrs. McIntyre. Miss Russell who got me in to music. She told me I should going in to singing as a career. I recall on Saturday morning I would get up early go and pick up soda water bottles wash them up and sell them to Rudy’s grocery on West Martin St. Sometimes I would go and cut some one’s yard there in the project with a push mower. The reason I did all of that was to get money to go to the princess theater to see a double feature western movie. Roy Rodgers, Gene Autry, Gabby Hayes, Rex Allen. Wild Bill Elliot and many more. Sometimes I would stay and see them twice. With less than a dollar you could go to the movie and eat all of the popcorn you could stand all of the soda you wanted. Before we would go to the movie I would go to Kelly’s news stand on the corner of Griner and Garfield and get a bag of kettle corn /then once you were in the movies you would mix it with the popcorn you would buy at the theater. If I didn’t stay to see the movie twice I would walk up Main St. and at that time on Saturday it was so crowded you could barely walk. How I wish we could see that kind of crowd today. Walk in to Morrison’s store and just look around at what they had for sale or Mr. Ripley’s and for sure go to Kress but as I say there was always a big crowd of people. I used to go in the Guarantee store just to look at the clothes. I was never able to buy anything there but they had some beautiful clothes there. Then I would go to Hoution’s music store and check out the guitars on display there. years later I was able to buy a g 70 Gibson from there I would then go to Seeger’s bakery and get some glazed donuts or cream puffs and then go next door to the Texas theater to see a Mexican movie. It seems there was always some one there who did not want me there. I was told you’re a gringo you don’t belong here go back to the princess or the Rita. Looking back now there was some good times. I loved to see the crowds on Main St. Listen to the people talking and just hanging, sometimes alone sometimes with Robert Diaz, Salvador Tobie Torres, Jimmy Flores, and Danny Meza. In closing let me say that although the crowds are not there any more take a walk down Main St and listen and learn starting at the Club Cafe at the railroad track all the way to the end of South Main where at that time was Caesar’s Steakhouse. There is a lot of history here in my home town Del Rio Texas go out and check it out I have been to a lot of cities but there is no place like my home town take care god bless. A Thank you to the Val Verde County Library and Victor Cirilo. HOWDY Happy new year and here is hoping that 2020 is your best year. On New Year’s Eve I drove around town to see if there was a lot of things going on here in our city. Mostly I was checking see if there were any groups playing around town. there were very few but I could not find one country band. Going back to the mid 60’s and late 60’s there were a good number of country groups. My Group Freddie and the Vaqueros, the trail master, Rhythm Ramblers, Tommy Vick, Bo Hutto, BOB GREY, BLONDIE Calderon and several more. A couple of these groups played very little country music. My band did 80 percent country 10 percent rock and roll and 10 percent Mexican or Spanish music. Back then it was a different crowd and a quitter way of celebrating the new year. Looking back, I do not remember any big fights where guns or knifes were used. People respected each other and did there best to have a good time and enjoy the time they were there together. If a person had too much to drink some one would watch over that person to make sure they did not get in trouble. Here in Del Rio we played the Elks lodge, the border patrol, cactus club, the little red barn, the hideaway, out on several ranches, private homes at Sadie’s in Junction. It was at Fort Clark that I met happy Shahan the owner of Alamo Village. He told me Freddie you are a good singer but you are not a great singer. He did ask me to join his song writing staff but I told him I was a singer not a song writer. a mistake I regretted later on. In my opinion the so-called country music of today is not what I call country music. I refused a lot of dances for Christmas eve because I would always stay at home on Christmas eve with the family and open the presents. I tried to be with my mom on Christmas eve because I was always gone playing music on New Year’s Eve. I recall on New Year’s Day my mom would fix black eyed peas. She said it would bring you good luck. Both of my older brothers were in the navy and when they were home for Christmas we all sang and played the guitars with my grand dad on the fiddle. All of the neighbors would show up and it was a good time for all. Us brothers would enjoy hearing my mom sing. I guess my music so called talent came from my mom as she and my granddad would play for dances in the 30’s the only sad thing I remember was by then my dad and mom had divorced and he was not there. It seems to me that Christmas and new years is all about making money now days. People do not not have the same feeling about things any more when you say JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON they get offended. Have you noticed that half of the churches in town are hardly ever full but you go to the park there is nowhere to park because there are so many people. The other day I was switching through the channels to find a good a movie I finally settled on one that had just started, it ran one hour thirty -seven minutes. I counted the F word sixty times and M.F twenty-five times. My question is why is that not against the law. Then there are the sex scenes that has gotten so bad that it is unreal. Now I am guilty of using bad language when I get upset but I always feel bad and ask the lord to forgive me and help me stop it. I guess what I am saying is I miss the good old days when people could get along and some things were left to the imagination. In closing let me say that I wish I could turn back the times to where life was a lot simpler and people were a lot friendlier. Thank the good lord above that you live in my home town Del Rio Texas and go out and visit some of the sights you will be amazed what is out their god bless. MAY YOU WAKE UP EVERY MORNING AND BE WHERE YOU WANT TO BE AND WHO YOU WANT TO BE WITH. Do something good for some one it will make you feel good. Be sure and read the article on mister ELOY Barrera in this month’s Texas Times a good friend and a real family man and a god-fearing Christian. Special thanks to Victor Cirilo and the Val Verde County Library. HOWDY. As we get into the holidays, I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year 2020. May the new year bring you complete happiness and good health and remember JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON. This time I would like to talk about our veterans and the time they served and where they were stationed. My uncle Tooter McDonald was in the army and served in Korea. His son Billy McDonald was in the navy aboard the aircraft carrier the Enterprise/His other son Mike McDonald was stationed in Germany. My uncle on my mother’s side was Fred Cross he was in the army as a medic and served in north Africa, Naples, and in Rome. I always enjoyed hearing some of his stories that he went through and the things he saw. On the other side my brothers Kenneth and Gerald aka boogie were both in the navy and were in Vietnam. They both refused to talk about what they went through and what they saw. I will say they were different men when they came home. Agent orange affected my brother boogie the rest of his life. I remember when I volunteered for the air force and they sent me to San Antonio and I spent the night at the Robert E Lee hotel and then the next day taking test seem like all day long they told me from the test results that I would be in some office some where but then they got the results from my physical and my lungs cause me to fail and I was sent home. It bothered me for a long time but I knew they were right the gasoline that had been poured down my throat seared my lungs and I have had breathing problems since then. Then I think about the ones that did not come back. Here in Del Rio the first one that comes to mind was the young man Limones. I am sorry I do not recall his first name. Another person that comes to mind is Bobby Barrera, he is a true hero and a great person from a good family. He was badly wounded and came home and he is still very active here in Del Rio. There are some more men who lost their lives but I do not recall their names but they gave their life so that we can be free to live in the greatest nation in the world the USA. The veteran’s day parade which was held here in Del Rio on Nov. 11 was a good example of the caliber of veterans we have here in this area. The parade was bigger this year and Mr. Joe Martinez did a good job putting it together. The grand marshal this year was Mr. Fred Vasquez WWII veteran. Radio station KWMC broadcast live and on Facebook part of the Veteran’s Day parade. When speaking to the little red rooster he stated that there was thousands of Mexican Americans that have died in several wars and somehow nobody talks about it. I would love to see a full roster of all of the Hispanics both men and women who served and some died for this country. I recall my brother stating when he and the men he served with came back to the states from Vietnam as they got off of the plane they were spit on among other things. To be honest with you I am concerned with the way things are here in the USA from Washington which is a disgrace what is happening today on down to almost every major city. There are problems with the homeless, the veterans not getting the help they deserve, the drugs, the murderers, the shootings. What will it take to correct it? First, they must have god in the picture and so many people do not any more. It is sad when you can not cut on your tv or your radio and here some good news for a change. My friends I am afraid that we are in for a rude awaking I realize this is a different looking back but I felt these things needed to be said. Thank the lord we live in Del Rio Texas and do not have those problems. Take time for your family and friends and remember do something good for someone and be glad you live in my home town Del Rio Texas. Thanks to Victor Cirilo and the Val Verde County Library. God Bless HOWDY,
Well this will be part two of the flood of 98. But first I would like to say that I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you spent time with your family and friends. I would also like to say a few words about the passing of Mr. John Graf. We worked togezther for a while at A&G electric and when he retired from the school district vocational electrical trades, I took over for him. He was a great man I met him when he was working for Taylor Duke Electric on Main St. he will be missed. This time I will talk about the Hernandez family and what they did during the 98 flood. I got this from my good friend Raul Hernandez local electrician. He lived on Jones street during the flood and still lives there today. Raul stated that his family has lived in the brown plaza area since the 1850. His great grandfather was Nicholas Rodriguez. They have lived within 50 ft of the San Felipe creek since his great grandfather settled here, his grandfather walked here from some where close to Monterey with his friend. He stated that he knows or knew many people born here and lived here 100 plus years. one person he met was Chonita a curandera that delivered most of the babies in the area. His grandma married Pedro Hernandez. When Raul father Antonio Hernandez was born, he lived here all his life. The flood of 98 was the biggest ever. Raul said his father’s cousin Memo Hinojosa would stay inside of his house to protect neighbors from thieves. They would try to make him leave but he wouldn’t go. I remember staying at the catholic church over night when the flood would come. And my dad and Memo would help neighbors get out, and I am still here today. Raul said that he, his brother Eddie, his father Antonio, his mother Bertha and others were inside and heard a noise, they looked out the window and saw a dump truck floating down jones street towards the river. We all went to my father’s house on Chapoy St. which was the street behind our house. Glendora Lowe who also lived on Jones street had already put her family on the roof. I prayed to god that we would be safe and all of a sudden, a large dump truck appeared and loaded all of us up. The dump truck started backing up. I told my family stay together god only knows where we will end up. We had to back up because that was the only way out the water was to deep and too strong to walk. My neighbors Beto and Lola Aroujo barley made it out. They took all of them to Austin school. Myself, my dad, my brother Eddie, stayed behind to help save people. We tied water hoses together to help people walk through the water, some younger children and some babies were able to be saved by the effort that the Hernandez family made. Carmen Ramirez Miguel Tomaton Hernandez pulled out a lot of people that would have drowned. Raul said that he estimated that at least seventeen people were saved from drowning. On a sad note Raul stated that there was two elderly gentlemen men who were lost because the water was to strong and to high to reach them. Their houses were also washed away. Raul said that Before he left his house, he went to check on his neighbor Fortino and Ninfa Guzman. I promised them I would come back for them. They could not walk so they sat on their bed and waited hoping the water that was still rising would not get to their chest. Raul his brother Walo, and Eddie got to them at 6 a.m. we broke down the door and I heard Tino say I knew you would come for us. Raul said that this is only a portion of what they did to help save lives and he also stated that he is so proud what his family has done in this neighborhood of San Felipe some very good people live here he says and he loves this area and has no intention of moving. In closing let me say this is only one story about people who care enough to step up and help people that need help. I hope that when you read this it will inspire you to lend a hand if you know someone who needs it and to do it out of the kindness of your heart. Let me end by saying god bless and try to help anyone you know that need help and thank the lord you live in this beautiful city my home town Del Rio, Texas. God Bless A special thanks to Raul Hernandez for taking the time in giving this story. Thanks to Victor Cirilo and the Val Verde County Library. HOWDY
The other day I was walking in my neighborhood and I witnessed something that I just could not understand or believe. There was an elderly lady trying to hang clothes and she was having a really rough time. Later speaking to her son, he told me she is in her seventies, with a heart condition and real bad problems with her legs and it is hard for her to walk without a walker. She left the walker inside so that she could carry the clothes basket. She fell down and was asking for help. Dalinda and I went to help her and I noticed that not fifty feet away were three young men that looked to be in their twenties. I ask them if they had not heard the lady asking for help and they said they did but they ignored it because they do not like her son. Now here is my question. Have we become a society that will let things like that stop helping someone that needs help? The flood of 98 came to mind where during that time I saw so many people helping other people because they needed help. When I walked out my front door and saw that the water was two feet deep and was up to my front porch I began to worry. I heard my neighbor ask for help because the water was so deep in his yard that it was running into the house. The reason he was asking for help was because the water was so deep in his back yard that his dogs that were tied to a tree were drowning. We were able to save his dogs. Inside we stacked up the furniture the best we could to save as much as we could. At that time, I was still teaching vocational at the Del Rio high school and we were told to go to a meeting at the high school with MR. ROBERTO BOBBY FERNANDEZ. He told us all to go out into our neighborhood and help anyone that needed help. My son Michael was 13 years old and he went with me and we would go and pick up cases of water and drive through the streets of San Felipe and give out water. We also helped the red cross deliver food to the area. No matter where you would go you would see someone helping someone. I know the flood was horrible but it brought people together and that is the way I wish it was today. It is sad to say but a lot of people now days when you ask them for help they want to know how much can you pay. The destruction that flood Charlie caused is still visible today. There are so many stories to be told about people that put their own life in danger to help someone else. Speaking to Victor Camposano he told me that he also would go and pick up cases of water and deliver them to any one that need it. Victor also told me about MR. DUB WHITEHEAD who lived on the curve just before you crossed the creek they called Los Patos. Victor said that the people from the Cienegas area would walk across the rail road bridge and go to Mr. Whitehead house and get water from his water well. He did that until the well went dry. If you knew MR. WHITEHEAD then you knew he was a good hearted Christian man and always tried to help other people. I was told that people were allowing people to get water out of there swimming pool so that it could be used to flush the toilets. Victor told me later on that he was over at the San Felipe creek area behind the San Felipe lions club and found a pair of scissors that were completely stuck through a tree. Can you imagine the force of the water to do something like that? I realize now that this has two be a two or three-part article to be able to cover some of the things I have heard from people about what they did to save family friends and even strangers and countless lives. Next month I will continue with the flood of 98 and tell the story of the Hernandez family and all they did to save people from drowning. In closing let me say if you see someone or know someone that needs help don’t hesitate help them out of the goodness of your heart and not for what you can get from them. GOD bless and remember be proud that you live in my hometown Del Rio Texas. Thanks to the Val Verde County Library and Victor Cirilo. I was at a convience store and watched a lady check out amovie at the red box.
It took me back to the time when there were three drive in theaters in Del Rio and three regular theaters. The drive in movies were the Ceniza, the Flamingo, and the Gay 90 drive in. There were three downtown movies on Main St. the Princess, the main theater the Rita, and then there was the Texas theater where they showed mexican movies. My best friend Robert Diaz and I were hired by MR. POAG to clean the drive in movies every morning. They paid us a dollar a day and free admission to all movies. We did not miss any movie believe me. I loved going to the Texas theater and seeing and hearing the western type mexican movies and songs they would sing. I would go to Seegers bakery and get some glazed donuts and go and see my favorite .My favorite was any movie with Lola Beltran, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Pedro Infante, among others. How I wish they still made movies like that. I recall one Saturday night some one had some kind of spell inside of the movie theater and the lady there ask Robert and I to help him. I walked over and put my hand on his arm and he grabbed me and threw me over the row of seats. He did the same to my friend. It took both of us to hold him down until the ambulance got there. I hurt the next morning like you would not believe. On Saturday I would go to the princess and watch a double feature movie with John Wayne, Roy Rodgers, Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Gaby Hayes and many more. My friend Victor Camposano said he did the same thing almost every Saturday. In those days they had what they called dollar night at the Gay 90. No matter how many people you had in your car you got in for one dollar. As well as i can remember it was on a Tuesday night. I could be wrong. I called Victor to ask him but he didnt answer. In those days i knew a young musician that was a homosexual and when he dressed up if you did not know him you could not tell he was not a woman. On a dollar night I saw him with a man going into the drive in and he held his finger up to his mouth for me to keep quiet. It wasn’t any business of mine so I did not say a word. About thirty minutes after the movie started I heard him screaming Help me Freddie help. They stopped the movie and Robert Diaz and I ran over to the car which was parked two rows away and the man was beating the hell out of no names please. We tore him off of the guy and ask why were you beating on him. He said because he is a he not a she. He said I was kissing and touching and all of a sudden I put my hand in a certain place and found out it is a man. I am going to kill the so and so but the cops showed up and took him away. One morning we were cleaning the drive in and found a set of diamond rings. About that time a gentleman walked up and ask if we had found a set of rings. I told him we had and he wanted me to give them to him and I refused. I tried to explain that i had to turn them in to my boss and then he could talk to him and work something out. Not no but hell no he said and tried to grabbed them out of Robert hand and Robert shoved him down and told him to get the hell out of there. He said I will call the police. He went to the pay phone outside the concession stand and called the police. He told the police we were stealing a set of wedding rings from him and he needed help. I called my boss and ask him to come over there and told him what was going on. When they all showed up the gentleman said that the night before him and his girlfriend came to the movies and he ask her to marry him. He said the rings had cost him 18 hundred dollars. He stated that the girl told him she was already married to a marine that was some where over seas. He said he called her a few choice words and the girl got out and walked off. He said he threw the rings out the window and drove off. When he woke up that morning he knew he had to get the rings. To make a long story short he got his rings back. Another time at another drive in movie a friend of Robert borrowed his pocket knife and he ended stabbing someone with it there at the concession stand. In closing let me say that although there was few problems when alcohol was involved but over all it was a good time to be alive. Del Rio is a great place to live. If you live here are just visiting be sure you walk the Dora Alcala trail along the San Felipe Creek and visit the whitehead museum and the winery I am proud to say Del Rio is my home town thank you and GOD BLESS. |
