On October 27 and 28, ten advanced students of the Del Rio High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) Media and A/V Production program attended the Austin Film Festival and Screenwriting Conference through the AFF Young Filmmakers Scholarship Program. Each student applied to the festival and were awarded a conference badge to attend the panels and screenings this year at Austin.
They attended panels on screenwriting, structure, plot and character development, and participated in the Young Filmmakers Pitch feedback sessions. The students had the chance to hear personal stories and industry challenges from known writers and producers such as Keenan Ivory Wayans, Matt Tolmach, Christina Hodson, Erich Hoeber, and Scott Rosenberg. During the pitch sessions, DRHS students Christopher Guzman and Marco Urteaga each pitched a script that they had been developing to known industry writers, James V. Hart, Cindy McCreery, and Emily Zulauf. The student pitch sessions give high school students the opportunity to receive feedback and learn more about the art of the pitch. During the weekend, the students also had the opportunity to see what other high school filmmakers from across the globe had produced this year during the Young Filmmakers Showcase screened at the Galaxy Highland Theatre. Overall, the students commented on the different insights and lessons that they had learned during the AFF Conference and hoped to return the following year. |
